This tradition for Wayúu women is an important part of their growth into adulthood. Every Wayúu woman goes through a transition ritual called “Yonna” (Jo-na), in which they cease being girls and are prepared to become women. This ceremony consists of an isolation period during which they focus upon and improve their skills of sewing and knitting. At the same time they are taught about issues such as maternity, being a housewife and life itself.
